Bruins can’t close the deal, lose to Panthers 4-3 in OT

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:09:03 GMT

The Bruins picked a heck of a time to lose their second straight game at the Garden. The B’s had not lost consecutive games on Causeway Street all season but, after dropping Game 2 here last week – then winning both Games 3 and 4 in Sunrise – the B’s had a chance to end the Florida Panthers’ season in Game 5 at the Garden on Wednesday.Instead, they gave the Panthers life in the most painful way possible, losing in OT, 4-3, on a Matthew Tkachuk goal.In overtime, Linus Ullmark and Matt Grzelcyk misplayed the puck behind their net and Sam Bennett pounced on it. As Ullmark scrambled to get back in net, Bennett threw the puck at him and it deflected out front to Tkachuk, who backhanded the winner home. The B’s outshot the Panthers, 47-26, but the goals allowed were again self-inflicted.The Bruins tied the game for the third time at 9:16 of the third when Taylor Hall dug out a puck in the slot, backed up and then beat goalie Sergei Bobrovsky with a high wrist s...

The feds warn that Jack Teixeira, accused of leaking classified documents on the war in Ukraine, could still expose more secrets if he’s released from prison with the potential for a “hostile nation” offering him sanctuary. The explosive accusations are contained in a 50-page motion for pre-trail detention shared with the Herald Wednesday night.Teixeira, 21, an E-3/Airman First Class stationed at Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod, was arrested at his family home in North Dighton earlier this month and has a detention hearing Thursday in federal court in Worcester.Prosecutors say he should not get out because the risk is too great.“In the first place, the Defendant poses a serious flight risk,” U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Rachael Rollins said in the motion. She added Teixeira “currently faces 25 years in  prison—and potentially far more—and … he accessed and may still have access to a trove of classified information that  would be of...

Mets drop 4th straight game after Nationals shut down offense again

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:09:03 GMT

With myriad injuries to pitchers and a suspension to an ace in the starting rotation, manager Buck Showalter needed Kodai Senga to go deep into Wednesday’s matchup against the Washington Nationals.Senga was able to reach the fifth inning, minimizing damage after a rough couple of innings in Wednesday’s 4-1 loss against the Nationals at Citi Field. The right-hander was up to 85 pitches before the start of the fifth inning, mainly because of a rough second and fourth. The righty allowed the leadoff man to reach base in the first four innings. In the second inning, Senga walked catcher Keibert Ruiz and gave up a double to former Met Dominic Smith. No. 7 hitter Lane Thomas got the Nationals on the board first, hitting an infield single that scored Ruiz. Former Padres prospect CJ Abrams singled to left, scoring Smith and extending the lead to 2-0.Senga allowed another walk in the frame but got three strikeouts to get out of the inning. After a relatively quiet top of the third, ...

Kansas sets trans athlete rule; gender-affirming care saved

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:09:03 GMT

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas board decided Wednesday that high schools and middle schools must see transgender athletes’ first birth certificates to decide what teams they can join, while an effort in the Legislature to end gender-affirming care for transgender minors failed. The Kansas State High School Activities Association’s executive board took a key step in helping the state enforce a ban on female transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports. It replaced a policy that allowed decisions to be made athlete by athlete with one that says transgender girls will not be allowed to compete on girl’s teams, starting July 1.The new policy follows a law enacted by the Republican-controlled Legislature earlier this month over a veto from Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly. The governor vetoed five GOP bills rolling back transgender rights, and Republicans are headed toward overriding three more, including a veto of a sweeping bathroom bill. But GOP conservatives...

Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson posted a cryptic video message to his Twitter profile late Wednesday evening — his first public comments since his ouster from Fox News this week. During the just over two-minute message, Carlson said he had realized after "stepping outside the noise for a few days" how many "genuinely nice people there are in this country." "The other thing you notice when you take a little time off is how unbelievably stupid most of the debates on television are," he continued. "They're completely irrelevant. They mean nothing. In five years, we won't even remember we had them. Trust me as someone who has participated in them." Carlson was ousted from his perch at Fox News on Monday in a shocking move that continues to ripple through the media industry and Republican party. Fox has given no reason for its parting ways with Carlson beyond a statement thanking him for contributions to the network. The former top prime time host's video on Wednesday was published ju...
