Adoptees, birth parents ready for MN birth records to open

Mary Jo Lindeberg is 81, but she has never stopped wondering: Who is she, really? She was born in St. Paul, just weeks after Pearl Harbor. She was adopted by an oral surgeon and his office nurse. They changed her name from Carol Louise to Mary Jo and raised her as their own.And for most of a century, she’s carried unanswered questions.“As a kid, I remembered having the fantasy of — oh, I bet my real mom was probably a beauty star and my father was probably a leader of industry,” she said. “Well, we all know that’s probably not the case.”She just doesn’t know. It’s a story common to many families — a secret birth, a new identity and a new love for a child — but also often decades of speculation and separation. For children born in Minnesota, adoptees get a new birth certificate and the details of their actual birth are sealed — their disclosure subject to a parental veto or to secrecy clauses in decades-old adoption agreements. It’s happened thousands of times a year in the past. But a ...

After Dallas Keuchel made a successful return to the major leagues on Sunday, it was going to be hard to upstage the veteran left-hander. Yet the rookie from Forest Lake managed to do it.After Keuchel pitched five strong innings to keep the Twins within striking distance of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Matt Wallner delivered the fireworks with a two-run home run in the ninth to give Minnesota a 5-3 victory in front of an announced crowd of 24,778 at Target Field. The win gave Minnesota a three-game sweep of their interleague opponent, their fifth win in six games and a 4½-game lead on second-place Cleveland in the American League Central — the perfect reward for fans who sat through nine innings on top of a 2-hour, 12-minute rain delay.“Capping off a sweep … with that is as good as it gets,” Wallner said. After Max Kepler greeted Arizona right-hander Paul Sewald with a game-tying home run to start the ninth. After pinch-hitter Jorge Polanco drew a walk, Wallner stepped into the box to fa...

The Americans’ bid to win an unprecedented third consecutive title ended Sunday night on penalty kicks when Lina Hurtig converted and Sweden knocked the United States out of the World Cup 5-4 after a scoreless draw.It is the earliest exit in tournament history for the United States, the two-time reigning champions and four-time winners.“We didn’t put anything in the back of the net,” sobbed Julie Ertz after the loss. “The penalties were tough. It’s just emotional because it’s probably my last game ever. It’s just tough. It’s an emotional time. It obviously sucks. Penalties are the worst.”U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher fruitlessly argued she had saved Hurtig’s attempt, but it was ruled over the line. That’s sort of embarrassing, and it’s rumored that Henry bought Lincoln Motor Co. to get his wife out of a Cadillac. The second time the Depression almost did them in. Fortunately, Edsel Ford, Henry’s son, came up with the Lincoln-Zephyr in 1935, and that saved the car brand again. The third time was during the years 1958-60, when Ford Motor Co. clearly misjudged the market. The Lincoln Continentals from 1958 through 1960 were the most massive cars built in America since World War II. They were huge, built on a 131-inch wheelbase, weighing more than 5,000 pounds and almost 19 feet long. They were a bomb. Only 2,044 were produced. Lincoln during this time period lost close to $60 million, or about $618 million in 2023 dollars. Robert McNamara, then Ford Motor’...
