Richardson and 3 rivals advance easily through 100-meter heats at worlds

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:43:04 GMT

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Sha’Carri Richardson, Marie-Josée Ta Lou, Shericka Jackson and defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce all won their 100-meter heats at world championships Sunday to stay on course for a showdown in what could be the most unpredictable final of the nine-day track meet. Richardson, the American national champion, crossed the finish line in the day’s fastest time, 10.92 seconds. She pretended to flick some sweat off her brow — no big deal, not that anyone expected that in the first round.Fraser-Pryce, the Jamaican who is seeking to tie a record by winning her sixth world championship in the same event, was slowing down as she crossed the line in 11.01.All in all, it was a low-drama start to what might be the best race of the meet, and a possible preview of more to come at the Paris Olympics next summer.Later on Sunday, American Fred Kerley was set to defend his 100-meter title, with Noah Lyles also in the mix. Lyles, a 200 specialist who is runn...

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Rai Benjamin is taking even bigger steps this season to try to get what his top rivals in the men’s 400-meter hurdles already have — a title from a major meet. The American altered his racing pattern in between the 10 hurdles, mixing in a longer stride cadence for better tempo and more speed leading into his finishing kick.Benjamin’s ready to upgrade his trio of silver medals in track’s major races into gold this week at the world championships. He wants to join the company of his main rivals, Norwegian Olympic champion and world record holder Karsten Warholm, along with reigning world champion Alison dos Santos of Brazil, in the winner’s spot.Their rivalry, along with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s record-setting performances in the women’s version (she’s not competing this week), are why the 400 hurdles have turned into must-watch TV these days.“Cool to spearhead this new-found niche, the 400 hurdles, because we’ve run so fast and we’re conti...

PHOTOS: Dan Snyder’s Potomac palace is now $14 million more affordable

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:43:04 GMT

As excited as some Washington Commanders fans were about former owner Dan Snyder’s sale of the team last month, nobody seems quite as interested in taking real estate off his hands.Snyder put his 30,000-square-foot Potomac, Maryland mansion up for sale in February, asking a cool $49 million for the property. But this week, the price dropped $14 million. Now, the five-bedroom estate and its 15.2 acres of land can be yours — for just under $35 million. This is not the first time Snyder has tried to shake this residence. He also asked $49 million for it in 2018, but that didn’t seem to work out. Since then, he’s purchased another riverfront mansion — this one for $48 million, located near George Washington’s Mount Vernon in Virginia and a downsize for Snyder with 16,000 square feet of space.Snyder reportedly bought the Potomac mansion for a little over $8.6 million in 2000, from the estate of Jordan’s King Hussein and Queen Noor.Source

Changes Coming to this Week’s Weather

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:43:04 GMT

Some big changes our ahead to our weather pattern this week in South Florida, and it’s mainly about the return of the breeze! It’s been a stagnant and hot summer but with a stronger breeze in place much of this week with sustained winds near 10-20 mph, that will allow for more bearable conditions when it comes to temperatures. Temperatures all week long will hover near 92-93F in Miami after today. This Sunday, we’ll remain under the influence of a departing tropical wave, which is now located over the Gulf of Mexico. Moisture continues to get drawn in from the Atlantic behind this wave, so that will feed in rounds of quick-moving showers and storms at any time today and tonight. Just like we saw on Saturday, it won’t be a washout but there will be that random risk for seeing rain. Now starting Monday, some drier air will start to come in from the Atlantic, and this entire week will feature bouts of drier air filtering into South Florida with high pressure in co...

Solid Summer Sunday

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:43:04 GMT

Well, the lower humidity was apparent yesterday, but unfortunately, the early morning sunshine didn’t last long as clouds filled back in, and stubbornly stuck around. Highs maxed out in the mid to upper 70s. The low humidity kicks off today as well, this time, more or the sunshine does stick around. Although, with that said, we’ll have some clouds mix in as well as some wildfire smoke, allowing for a hazy appearance to the sky at times. It’s not near surface smoke, so I don’t expect it to have a significant impact on air quality. Enough sun gets through to push temps in the lower to mid 80s this afternoon. Humidity does go up tomorrow, and it’ll be very warm with highs in the mid to upper 80s. A few isolated late afternoon/early evening showers/storms are possible (Mainly after 4pm). About 20-30% of us will pick up on one. Those isolated storms are ahead of a cold front that’ll drop temps and humidity by Tuesday morning. Tuesday – Thursday, ...

8 dates to watch for on the Chicago Bulls’ 2023-24 schedule, including Victor Wembanyama’s United Center debut and a tough final stretch

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:43:04 GMT

The Chicago Bulls kick off the 2023-24 season with a home game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Oct. 25, then host the Toronto Raptors two days later before embarking on their first trip of the year.Last season’s opener took a left turn for the Bulls when Zach LaVine was named a late scratch due to load management — which LaVine and coach Billy Donovan insisted was planned in the preseason — as he eased back from a left knee injury. LaVine went on to record one of the strongest seasons of his career, and he’ll need to improve upon that performance after the Bulls retained the majority of their roster to focus on their maximum-contract star. The focus of the home opener likely will land on who nabbed the starting point guard job — perhaps new signing Jevon Carter, who joined the Bulls from the Milwaukee Bucks. Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu also will be vying for the position. Here are some key dates for the season.Nov. 3: First game of the In-Season Tourn...

Spain is the fifth winner in nine editions of the Women’s World Cup and joins Germany as the only two nations to win both the men’s and women’s tournament. At the final whistle the Spanish players piled on each other in front of their goal. They were still dancing on the field until the trophy presentations, where they kissed the trophy and raised their arms in triumph as golden glitter fell from above. The Lionesses were trying to bring a World Cup back to England for the first time since 1966, but fell just short.“They’re a fantastic team.
