Consumer seafood guide advises people to avoid Chesapeake Bay oysters. But why?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:20:23 GMT

The Chesapeake Bay oyster population has been flourishing over the last few years, but a California based seafood guide disagrees. Seafood Watch, a well-known consumer guide about sustainable seafood, has released its latest draft and is telling people to avoid eating wild caught oysters that come from the Bay.A look at the draft shows the bay as being overfished and poorly managed, adding “current abundance levels in the Chesapeake Bay overall are still low. As a result, Seafood Watch deems eastern oyster abundance in Virginia as a ‘high’ concern.”WTOP has reached out to the organization behind the report for comment. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is behind the guide, but declined a request for comment from the Bay Journal about the rating, saying the draft assessment may change, depending on public comment. The public comment period ended last week. The findings have led to some criticism from the local industry. Liverpool and Southampton draw 4-4 in wild season finale

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:20:23 GMT

SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) — Goals from Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota salvaged a 4-4 draw for Liverpool at Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday as the Merseyside club’s season ended in wild circumstances. Jurgen Klopp’s team had blown a two-goal lead at St Mary’s before coming back from 4-2 down to scramble a point. Gakpo and Jota both struck in the space of a minute of each other to ensure a disappointing campaign for Liverpool at least did not end in defeat. Klopp’s side has endured a troubled season that has seen it miss out on qualification for the Champions League for the first time since 2016. But there have been clear signs of improvement in recent weeks, with Liverpool heading into Sunday’s match on the back of a 10-game unbeaten streak. The visitors were 2-0 up after goals from Jota in the 10th minute and Roberto Firmino in the 14th. James Ward-Prowse — who was potentially making his final Southampton appearance — halved the deficit in the 19...

LONDON (AP) — Premier League champion Manchester City lost its final game of the campaign as Ethan Pinnock’s late goal earned Brentford a 1-0 win and a home-and-away double over Pep Guardiola’s team on Sunday. The center back celebrated signing a new four-year contract earlier in the day by scoring an 85th-minute winner. With the title sewn up last weekend, Guardiola rested some of his big hitters ahead of next weekend’s FA Cup final. The Champions League final is seven days later for City. With Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish missing completely and Erling Haaland left on the bench, it was a scratch City side and those established stars who did play, like Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez, had little impact.Brentford still had something to play for, by contrast, as the team was in with a slim chance of qualifying for the Europa Conference League before wins for Tottenham and Aston Villa ultimately wrecked those hopes. The home players applauded the champions onto the field, but ...

Orioles’ John Means ‘absolutely’ expects to pitch in 2023 despite setback during Tommy John recovery

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:20:23 GMT

Orioles left-hander John Means was going through his typical routine to pitch ahead of an extended spring training game, slamming a medicine ball against a wall to activate his upper body. But on the final throw, Means “just kind of wanted to go a little hard,” he said Sunday morning in the Orioles’ Camden Yards clubhouse, only to feel a tug in his upper back. Having experienced shoulder issues in the past and working to address them throughout his recovery from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery, Means said his initial thought was, “Are you kidding me?” The injury — a strain of the teres major muscle in the shoulder blade area — proved to be unrelated to his previous ailments, but it will keep Means, the organization’s top starting pitcher for much of its rebuild, from returning from his elbow surgery in July as hoped.Asked whether August is now the target, Means said, “Something like that,” saying he “absolutely...
